Feline fun

Sitges and Dax have heard a lot about Chiik, our kitten who will be returning with us to Canada. So far, neither of them have responded to emails about how sweet he is....and so far they don't look very impressed.

I am Chiik, the little Mayan cat who is coming home with my Moms to live in Canada. I hope my 2 new sisters like me - I like everybody!!!

Last week in PM

Had a great evening of Guinness, wine and unexpected pizza at Sharon and Les's the other night. Last visit till the fall - we will miss you guys!

Ah, yes, the circus is still in town and driving the streets dragging lions, tigers, leopards and monkeys to advertise. This trailer had 3 lions, 2 females and a huge male, and surprisingly all these animals seem totally unconcerned with the heat, the driving around, and probably the fumes from the truck.

Last night at the bookstore one of the people with an amazing voice and guitar skills did an impromtu concert for us outside our window! Triny's waiter Luis joined in and it was great fun

Mexican Circus!

One of the more depressing aspects of Mexican culture is the circus. They LOVE their circuses, but from what we have heard the animals are not treated very well and live a pretty sad life. Nevertheless, when the circus comes to town - this is about the 3rd time this winter - huge trucks with loud music and shouting recordings drive up and down our streets pulling huge wagons behind them.

On our way to dinner last night, here was a magnificent tiger being towed around. We have also seen a double cage, one with a tiger, one with an enormous male lion, and another with 2 leopards - one of whom is white. It really is a shocking thing to see these huge animals driving down the street in the blazing heat, seemingly unconcerned about where they are.

Another cage had howler monkeys, and when the wagon train stopped at a corner, all the kids ran up to take a look. Of course, there are wild howler monkeys in the Yucatan, but I don't know how many kids every see them.

The last trailer had 6 spider moneys who were never still - spent every moment wildly swinging around their cage - no doubt wishing they were back in the jungle where they live wild and free.

Fun in PM

Had a wonderful dinner party at Sandra and Dan's with their friend and writer/psychic Kate. This jungle home is just lovely and Chef Dan presented us with an amazing salmon dinner, done on the barby. Thanks! See you next year.

Helen, Rick and Sheila from Victoria came to our casa for some pool time, drinks and appies, after which we headed to town for dinner.

La Panza Es Primera - "the stomach is first!" is the name of this great PM restaurant - on the beach, good food, great service and goofy wrestling motifs everywhere!

Last 2 weeks

As well as all the colourful lights I showed you for the overpass, Mexico seems fixated on lighting these days. Every street lamp in PM, all along the highway and in Cancun have been changed to these environmentally healthy ones.

Our friend Richard came over for drinks and appies on Tuesday, and gifted Miki with a cell phone - something she has been wanting all year. Now we will each have a phone instead of trying to share one phone. Thanks Richard!

Greg Sanchez, the head of Cancun municipality, is running for the Governorship, so his big campaign bus pulled into the Colonia today! Hundreds of workers in Sanchez T shirts giving away CDs, soccer balls and T shirts, with a band on one pickup. They bought some of Guadalupe's chicken and got pop and stuff at other local stores....smart public relations.

Just when Chiik thought he was all finished at Dr. Jorge's, he started to do his male spraying the other day .....yikes! When he was neutered last month, only one of his testicles had dropped and since he is now spraying, I took him in today and yup - there was the other one!! So dear Jorge put him out again and remove the second one. He is still out cold and will have a very quiet night, bless him - the cat, not the doctor.

Wedding on the beach

A lovely couple from the U.S. got married on Friday night at Sak Ol - a quaint beachfront hotel here in Puerto Morelos. Diane (Mama's Bakery) catered the wedding and produced an amazing wedding feast. Miki and I were part of the kitchen crew, helping slice, dice, barbeque and whatever Diane needed doing.

Diane and Lorraina putting the final touches on the wedding cake.

Lorraina's Mom with the roses for the cake.

The final product - gorgeous!!!!! Note the bare feet for a wedding on the beach....:-)

The tired but happy catering crew......great job, Diane, on a magnificent wedding feast!Posted by Picasa

New PM Overpass

PM has a brand new overpass - was started in June and finished in December - try finding that kind of schedule in the U.S. or Canada.....! Anyway, it diverts the through traffic going to Playa del Carmen and Tulum and allows the local traffic to access PM.
Pretty spiff - but the funny thing is the lighting! It looks like a 1970s disco scene at night with all these colours fading into one another.

Monsoon!

Dr. Jorge, our wonderful vet, did Chiik's last set of vaccinations this week, so last item is to get his certificate of health which we do just a couple of days before we leave.

We are experiencing amazing tropical rainfall for a few days (I feel so badly for the tourists who are only here a week - like Helen's daughter, Mel and hubby Jake). The back patio was 3 inches deep in water, so glad we were home to keep the drains clear of leaves and not end up with a flood in our house - again!

The pool became an infinity pool in no time.......! But hey, it is still 23 - 25 degrees, so no problemo!

And you can see how kitten Chiik has spent these rainy days - !!!!!

Another social week!

Our friend Lauren was here again from NY State for a week, and generously took us for breakfast on the day she had to fly home - thanks, Lauren. Come back soon!

Valerie from Victoria was also here again this week with her dear buddy from Ontario, so we joined them for a drink after work one night.

Helen and Rick came back to our casa and we enjoyed a great chicken lunch from the coolness of the pool!

Before they headed back to Cancun, we had drinks at La Suerta after Rick shopped for his handsome silver bracelet and Helen indulged in a lovely dress and jacket from Sofia's shop.

Went to one of our favourite haunts for lunch the other day and enjoyed a quiet afternoon at the beach.

Sailboats were enjoying the breeze

Fish boats and snorkel boats at rest

Oh - and look - a snorkel boat the same name as grand daughter Vanessa!!!!!
